Is there anything more vital than the care and protection of our children? As a Christian, a wife, a mother of six, and an educator, my answer like yours, I’m sure, is an emphatic My God No! Like many of you, I believe that a society that does not invest in its youth divests from it’s future. But in spite of all of our great proclamations as good Americans, good Christians, our nightly headliners report a different story.

There is a strange phenomenon I am aware of, a condition that belies explanation. I have become so accustomed to this mentality, this over-indulgent way of living, so acclimated to this modern day Babylon, that I scarcely feel its constant pull on my life at times. The slogans surround me, things like” It’s all about you, and isn’t it about time?”, Or “Have it your way”, etc. Wherever I look, whatever I watch, whomever I am around, all seem to be desperately trying to ream some degree of satisfaction from a world overflowing with opportunity, chance, prosperity, and ironically, emptiness.

As always, he seems to complicate our otherwise simple lives. St. Matthew’s Gospel presents us with a perplexing problem, one that makes me wonder if we could actually pray incorrectly. Why isn’t it enough just to do good? Why isn’t it enough just to fast? I usually think of Lent in those simple terms. Can I really make it forty days without…? Can I make myself really get up thirty minutes early for the next forty days in order to pray? Can I…? |

My walk with Christ and the events leading to my relationship with Christ have made for quite a journey. I was baptized in the Catholic Church as an infant but my parents stopped attending church when I was very little. My only exposure was when I visited my grandparents. Even then it was more out of family duty and obligation than anything else. By the time I entered my high school and college years, I realized that religious ritual was empty. I began seriously questioning my faith and whether or not I believed in the existence of a supreme being. I was not an atheist by any stretch but still skeptical nonetheless.

It came to my attention recently while I was visiting a Mosaic church that I was pretty uneducated in the aspects and origins of many holidays, St. Patrick’s Day included. The pastor began to elaborate on the historical figure known as Saint Patrick and as I listened, I made a mental note to look into the people and events behind this annual celebration for the future.
