On a recent trip to Houston, Texas, we traveled by the huge statue of Sam Houston on Interstate 45. My husband and I took the opportunity to explain to our six-year-old about the man depicted in the statue. Bruce explained a brief portion of Texas history and then I concluded with, “He lived a very long time ago,” to which my daughter responded “like 1995?” Ouch!

Standing on the beach, looking at the water on a calm day, all appeared peaceful and beautiful. Yet once I donned my snorkel and goggles and looked beneath the surface I saw an amazing transformation! Beneath the calm surface sea creatures darted about and a multitude of plant life grew!
Stopped In Traffic
"Look at that gal talking with her hands," I thought with curiosity. Inquisitive Kathy was at work again, noticing people living life out loud. "Wait a minute, she's not in a discussion, she is doing hand motions. Maybe she is using sign language."

A Degree Worth Receiving

A few years ago my family had a big discussion about the importance of college degrees versus life experience. A friend of ours had lost his job and because he didn't have a college degree, was being passed up for a lot of jobs he was more than qualified for. I argued that even though I have a college degree I felt that this man's experience should put him on an even plane with me, and in some instances beyond me. It was interesting. Those in the discussion who had the college degrees felt as I did, but those who didn't have degrees felt that the degree should give me a "leg-up.” I thought about that discussion for some time before I realized where the disparity came from. Those of us who have learned a lot have learned that the more we learn the more we know what we don't know. In other words, our knowledge shows us how much we have yet to learn.
Momma Look!
“Momma watch me!” How many times a day do we hear that? It wears me out! I look, but then they want to show me again…and again. Whether it’s my 12-year-old upside down in a handstand on the wall, my third-grader showing me her most recent crocheted ankle bracelet (I’m wearing one now!), or my son showing me how he can lift the chair with one muscular arm, they all need my attention, encouragement, and delight.
