Hoot Owls and Freebies!
Usually I start my day sitting in my sunroom early in the morning, curled up in my recliner with my coffee and watching the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and whatever else may come by! There is a hoot owl that comes every spring, and, throughout the summer his “hoot” greets me in the morning and evening. The soft tones of his voice drift through the early morning breezes as if to say "good morning" and again in the evening, the old fellow's voice drapes the dusk of night and says, "Sleep well." It is such a peaceful sound.
Whether through nature or other, God gives us many, many free gifts to enjoy. He is generous in His love, loving in His forgiveness, faithful to His Word, wise in His instruction. There are no walls that can hold the “freebies” to be had in a life lived for Christ. Moment-by-moment His voice resonates softly, tenderly and inaudibly into the channels of our thoughts and the desires of our hearts. The little hoot owl sends his song freely and soothes the noise of life away into an elusive shadow to those who lend an ear—but, how much greater is God’s voice crying out for our attention? Never could more passion be evident and it’s free for the listening!
There are so many sounds to fill the air. Sounds can rob us of the “mighty things” that God longs to reveal. Sounds turned to silence will enable the sound of the still, quiet voice of God to be heard in the midst of every situation. There is great strength in silence because silence nurtures Godly strength. “Be still and know that I am God.” God is in the sound of nature, God is in His Word, God is in our midst—if you seek Him, you will find Him. Listen…..listen.….listen!
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I want to hear Your voice above all the other sounds. Help me to hear as You answer and show me great and mighty things. Let me recognize You in the sounds of Your creation and in the silence of the midnight.
