An Honest Mistake

One day, a young man was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard.  Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him.  Even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection, he decided to do the right thing and stop at the crosswalk. The tailgating woman pounded the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection with him.  Her arms wailing and finger pointing let the young man know just how disgusted she is with him.  In the middle of her ranting, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.  To her surprise the officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.  He handcuffed her and took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell.

After a couple of hours, the arresting police officer approached her cell and opened the door.  He escorted her back to the booking desk where her personal belongings were given back to her.  Before he could say anything to her, she began to rant and rave about the lawsuit that she was planning to bring upon the city and arresting officer.  That’s when the officer started apologizing for his mistake.  He said, “Please forgive me, I have made a terrible mistake and I'm very sorry.” With her finger in his face she screamed, “You had better be sorry!  You are going to pay for this!”“  Please let me explain,” said the officer humbly.  “I pulled up behind your car at that light and I witnessed you blowing your horn and screaming.  I saw you flipping the guy off in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him.  Then I noticed the ’ I love Jesus’ license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do' decal in your window, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk."

“So, what about it?” said the woman.

To which the officer replied, "I just assumed that you had stolen the car."

Never let us forget, fellow Christians, what God‘s Word says, “You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16).”

Our good works and good behavior cannot bring us forgiveness of sins.  Only Jesus can do that, but our good works and behavior can make others want to know the Jesus that you know!  Always remember, even when you least expect it, someone is watching.

Verse of the week:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:8-10
