Being a standup comedian comes with its own set of unique experiences.  The other night before a show I had an email from a fan asking what my favorite cookie was.
 
Quick side note. Comedians get paid next to nothing – almost as little as online humor columnists.  So I don't mind using fans for occasional caloric perks.  In fact, I'm not opposed to outright asking on-stage, "Can someone please bring me a Wendy’s Triple, please? I'm starving!"

In my mother’s one-pivot kitchen, she could place her foot in the center and pivot to the stove, sink, fridge or table.  Bright orange linoleum covered the floor, something Mama would mop with vigor, stand back approvingly, and then sigh with satisfaction.  Every day enticing aromas filled our small home from my mother’s central command: beans, onions, garlic, chile, tortillas. As a child I never had to wonder what to do, my mother’s voice ordered me to action.  “Chop the onion in tinier pieces, squeeze more out of these limes, get the dog out of here, and put the guacamole on the table. Stand up straight.”

Moses was called to a task he didn’t feel equipped to do: Talk with Pharaoh and be the man to lead the Children of Israel out of Egypt. I can just hear him stuttering all his excuses to God. David was the youngest of many sons and yet, God called him to kill Goliath and chose him to be king. Rahab ran the first Underground Railroad for displaced spies. Countless others in God’s Word were called to do hard things.

An Invitation to Intimacy

To be invited to the home of a friend for a meal is always an honor. There is something about sharing a meal while talking about the happenings in life and enjoying the fellowship.

Remember playing outdoors as a child and suddenly hearing the sound of Mom’s voice as it echoed across the yard, “Come to dinner!” Hungry and ready for family, food and good conversation, you raced to be first at the table!
