Movie Review: The Theory of Everything

I find it interesting (and also a little disturbing) when the director of a movie plays one of the lead roles.  I wonder how someone can do that successfully, since it is almost impossible to be objective about one's own performance. David DeVos seems to pull it off okay in this movie.  However, I think Victor Lundin steals the show as a mentally impaired, sweet-and-sour old man who is searching for the theory of everything–which will scientifically prove the existence of God.  Frances Black portrays the wife very nicely in her film debut.   David's real wife, Stephanie, was a co-producer of the movie.  Both children in the movie were David and Stephanie's real-life daughters. The oldest child reminded me of the middle daughter on Full House. One reviewer said that the actors acted naturally, giving the appearance of not acting at all.  In my estimation, being real should always be the goal of an actor, so in that regard this movie could be considered successful.

Is Reality TV Really Reality?

I never thought I’d like the reality television shows, so when flicking through the channels, I would always pass them by.  One night, desperately seeking for something relaxing to watch and after surfing from beginning to end and finding nothing, I started browsing the channels again and happened to pause on a program called Nanny 911. After watching it for a minute or two, I decided to finish watching the entire show.  I was delighted and went back for more.  Each episode found not merely one life being changed but an entire family being made new by parents learning how to properly rear their children. It was wonderful seeing Christian principles for raising children being applied in almost every circumstance.

Yee-haw!  Horses and cattle, ranches and hide-outs, outlaws and cowboys, and some booby traps for good measure—Petticoat Ranch has it all.  The story starts with tougher-than-nails Sophie Edwards, who is trying to raise four girls on her own.  After her husband was hanged by vigilantes, Sophie couldn’t hang onto the ranch, and every man in town proposed to her.  Not feeling safe, she took her daughters and fled into the dense thicket and a one-room shack.  It’s a stormy night when a man barges into their haven, riding fast and hard as if being chased.  When he falls into the gorge, she saves him—even though his pursuers are the same men who killed her husband.  That was shock enough.   But even bigger is the one that greets her when she wipes the mud off her guest’s unconscious face—though she cut him down from the tree herself, she’d swear it’s her husband lying in her mule’s stall.

Movie Review: Six – The Mark Unleashed

Looking for an action film involving Christianity?  Here you go.  There's nothing like the mark of the beast to bring intrigue into a story.  Any Christian who allows thoughts to flow through their head has had to grapple with the story of the mark at least once.  The Bible says that there is only one unforgivable sin: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.  However, the Bible also mentions that anyone taking the mark on their hand or forehead will spend eternity in hell.  Logic dictates that taking the mark is, in essence, unforgivable–thus it must be an example of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.  This story features three people who have refused to accept the mark, but not because they are believers.  We witness the subtle plots and coercion used by the government to try to bring these people into line with society while the outcast Christians use love and scripture to battle for people's minds.
