I couldn't find a bio for the Ontario based band that is Article One (brothers Nathan and Matt Piche, Dave De Smit and Mark Laidman). So, I decided to write the spotlight on the merit of their music alone…I started the MySpace player and did the best thing to do while writing an article: surf the web.

Music in its purest form should be inspirational, exciting and life changing. I really believe that today’s independent music is poised to experience growth in spite of the challenges the music industry faces. Throughout history, heartfelt music didn’t depend on external sources to fuel it. Creativity and improvisation can only be produced by inspiration and the soul of an artist or a band.

Kristyn Leigh’s sophomore record ‘The Heavy and Holy’ is an amazing composition of youthful music and classic church hymnals, sure to be a delight to listeners of any age range. Kristyn’s love for singing the old church hymns and passion for rock n roll led her to combine the two with her sultry voice. Kristyn grew up singing hymns in her church and it was no doubt that she could sing Christian contemporary music. But, when she started high school, a new possibility opened up for her. She loved to sing praise to the Lord, but she also had the heart to reach her peers in her generation. Being able to connect with people on relevant issues within her lyrics, Kristyn was able to combine the atmosphere of being in a church with being in a rock band.

Where do we go from here, from a Christian music standpoint? The word “hope” implies confidently that the next generation will continue to follow the path that their pioneering generation blazed. Christian music from the past to now must leave an imprint on the next generation of singers and musicians. A firm foundation is encapsulated in the sound of the band: “Escaping The Crowd.” Ministry, family and strong ties to their local church, define these young people whose ages range from ages 15-19.
