Recently, my family faced a very trying time. My grandfather passed away due to a heart attack, stroke, and other complications. Through his death, it has made our family stronger. We do not always understand why God does what He does or why He chooses to take things away from us. Unlike God, we cannot always see the bigger picture that He has planned for us. He has a purpose for every trial that He has strategically placed in our lives.

Do you remember your first summer job? Mine was a 40-hour shift working at a fast food restaurant, complete with mopping floors and working a drive through window.
"May I help you? Would you like fries with your order?" I said into the speaker.
After a few days on the job, I decided to eat a burger myself. A second wave of customers piled into the lobby right about the time I grabbed my cheesy snack.

Trapped like a Rat

Dressed in footed pajamas, our toddler son held the side of his crib and stared longingly over the rail. He chewed and adjusted the pacifier perched on his lips, hung his head in defeat, and whispered his first full sentence. “Trapped like a rat.”
When our son was young, he had absolutely no concern for safety and would have loved to run and play. Much to his chagrin, we kept him in his crib for his protection.

Reverence for God

I think of how most of us view God or approach him in today’s day and age. I’ve seen t-shirts that say “Jesus is my homeboy”, WWJD bumper stickers and fish decals on the back of cars. This stuff is all neat, and I’m sure it makes a few bucks for whoever is selling it. But is this who our God really is? Is our Lord and creator of the universe really something to stamp on a lunchbox and sell alongside Hannah Montana? Now, I’m not saying we should resort to strict solemnity where God rejects any form of fun or that we should be boring. But I feel there is a fine line we need to take a look at.
