The scene is familiar, clichéd. The villain’s footsteps ring in the hall outside the castle’s library door. The heroine frantically scans the library’s musty interior for a back door exit. Nothing.  The windows are narrow and barred.  She’s moments away from the dark terror of the villain’s intents.  She backs toward the far wall as the footfalls cease and the latch on the door begins to move.  She collapses against the bookcase behind her…and it moves, swinging smoothly on a massive hinge, offering her a secret passageway to safety.

For 400 Years

Today, through the eyes of a child, I saw what pure and innocent joy in the Lord must look like to God. Twenty-seven children participated in a praise and worship workshop in which they learned all forms of worship beginning with liturgical dance. As the workshop began, they were uncomfortable and self-conscious. I could tell several of them were not too sure of this form of praise.

Doubting Faithful

Have you ever felt like a hypocrite at church?  I have.  There are days when doubt overtakes me, when the mountains seem bigger than my faith, and the road is filled with more obstacles than I can imagine.  Sometimes I feel so small.  Then the voices of doubt are louder than my voice of faith.  I hear the voices in my head say things like, “If He loved you that much, you wouldn’t be going through all of this”, and “Look at that person over there.  At least she’s having fun.”

Draw Yourself a Bath

I should have known I needed to be more specific with a little boy that’s prone to distraction.  He’d handled all the snakes and frogs he’d cared to for the day, abandoned his tree fort, left the makeshift dirt bike trail (which at our house meant a dirty bike on a plain old trail), and come into the house with enough soil behind his ears and between his toes to grow a decent crop of pumpkins.
