The Special Olympics begins this weekend. After hearing about it on Good Morning America it really prompted me to take a glance back to my childhood. I had the privilege to be raised in a home where there was someone who had Down Syndrome—my uncle. Yes, my heroic mother was the primary caregiver of my uncle during my childhood and now my aunt takes care of Steve.

Momma Look!

“Momma watch me!” How many times a day do we hear that? It wears me out! I look, but then they want to show me again…and again. Whether it’s my 12-year-old upside down in a handstand on the wall, my third-grader showing me her most recent crocheted ankle bracelet (I’m wearing one now!), or my son showing me how he can lift the chair with one muscular arm, they all need my attention, encouragement, and delight.

Family Reunion

The more homesick a person becomes the sweeter the plans for reuniting with family.  I'm not homesick for a place, but for my people.  I haven't seen Mom in months, and for many other family members it's been years.  Our calendar is filled with dates scratched off for family reunions this year.  Some are formal reunions with extended family; others are more intimate gatherings for just a few.  Each event will be special in its own way.

Dance, Dance, Dance

My children are very musical.  From very early in life, both enjoyed singing “their” song as I put them to bed.  This habit led to numerous CD purchases and now as they grow older—musical instruments and toy microphones.  However, what I didn’t expect is to see how quickly they began to dance.
