I laid the wide square of gift wrap in the middle of my bedroom floor, first mistake. I was probably already frazzled, but I don’t remember why. I may have left this task until the last minute. I may have been out of pretty paper and settling for the biggest scrap in my closet. The gift was bulky and unwieldy, and I may have been self-conscious about my lack of creating beautiful-package skills. Some other problem may have weighed heavy on my mind.

Texas is experiencing three days of rain and storms, much needed moisture to feed the dry earth. The reverse of this drought relief is that the cold and blustery winds have pushed down the daffodils that are just starting to bloom and have probably frozen the peach blossoms that are budding. That means no peach crop this year.

During my bachelor days, I zipped around in a spiffy sports car that had a powerful engine, sleek lines, and cool-looking retractable, pop-up headlights. One day a headlight bulb burned out, so I bought a replacement. I removed the old one and placed the new bulb inside the headlight housing. Before securing the bulb, I flipped the switch to test it. The headlight flipped down into the well, and I heard a clunk.

In my mother’s one-pivot kitchen, she could place her foot in the center and pivot to the stove, sink, fridge or table. Bright orange linoleum covered the floor, something Mama would mop with vigor, stand back approvingly, and then sigh with satisfaction. Every day enticing aromas filled our small home from my mother’s central command: beans, onions, garlic, chile, tortillas. As a child I never had to wonder what to do, my mother’s voice ordered me to action. “Chop the onion in tinier pieces, squeeze more out of these limes, get the dog out of here, and put the guacamole on the table. Stand up straight.”
