Who Is Packing Your Parachute?

Recently I read a great article about a navy pilot.  Shot down over Vietnam, he was forced to eject and parachute right into enemy hands, where he spent five years in an enemy prison camp.

Many years later he met a man at a restaurant who came to shake his hand.  This man had been his “parachute packer”.  Assigned to the bowels of the ship he carefully and laboriously packed parachutes for those above, those who would be flying on mission, carrying his parachutes as a safety net in times of danger.

Brokenness

When people experience brokenness, such as a bone in their body, several things occur.  The first feeling is pain because an unnatural, unwanted disconnect that has happened and rendered their body immovable or at a disadvantage.  The next feeling may be a feeling of sadness.  Sad that they have lost some freedoms that they may have once had.  Doubting that they may get those freedoms back.  The things that they did before, the places that they went freely may not be where they can go in the future.

When Should I Fast?

I have wrestled with the question of when and how to fast.  I must confess that I have fasted very little and have struggled with my motives in fasting.  For example, I do not believe it is right to think that God owes me something because I am fasting and praying and thereby am adding extra effort to my prayers by fasting.  He is sovereign God and I am but an imperfect creature.  Therefore, I believe the Holy Spirit must move you to want to fast about something rather than think: "I will do this so that God will answer my prayer."  I have been told that fasting is not for God but to help us focus on Him and draw us closer to Him.  What pleases Him is what I must do.
