I am convinced that the challenge for men to stay sexually pure is as difficult today as anytime in history. In a generation where swimsuit models are painted on the sides of commercial airplanes, where sex before marriage is encouraged, and where whatever image the heart desires can be produced in seconds, the test is daunting. But Jesus said, “everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28 NAS). Paul said, “flee from sexual immorality” (1 Cor 6:18 NIV). For Christian men, purity is not only possible, it is necessary. The following five guards will help.

I carry a small rock in my pocket, everywhere I go. It’s not a gemstone, a fossil, or precious metal, such as gold or silver. It’s just a common polished rock that has little to no monetary value. It is not a good luck charm or anything to do with superstition.

A man approached as I walked to my car from a restaurant. “Sir, Can I ask you a question?” Thin and middle-aged, he wore a polo shirt and cargo shorts.
I stopped.

“My family and I were traveling back from relatives and our car broke down. We’re stuck in this hotel over here.” The man pointed to a hotel down the block. “And we don’t have enough cash to get a room. I hate to ask, but do you have a couple of dollars?” He had the delivery of a used car salesman.

I have often heard that the first year of marriage is difficult—ours was no exception. Adjustments in living habits, meeting each other’s needs and expectations, and family obligations were just a few of the challenges.
 
Shortly after our first anniversary, Gail and I attended a business fellowship banquet. During the prayer time, a soft voice echoed inside me. Which way is it—your way or Mine?
