Devoted
The house was large enough—and the marriage cold enough—that the husband and wife could claim the same address but barely toss each other an occasional glance.
Both were devoted to their jobs, working long hours, doing more than expected. Both devoted themselves to their children. Interviewers captured sound bytes that repeated, “It’s all about the children. Everything I do is for the children.” The unspoken sound byte? “It’s none about the marriage. Nothing I do is for the marriage.”

“ …Guard what has been entrusted to your care.” I Timothy 6:20 NIV
Recently I read a great article about a navy pilot. Shot down over Vietnam, he was forced to eject and parachute right into enemy hands, where he spent five years in an enemy prison camp.
Many years later he met a man at a restaurant who came to shake his hand. This man had been his “parachute packer”. Assigned to the bowels of the ship he carefully and laboriously packed parachutes for those above, those who would be flying on mission, carrying his parachutes as a safety net in times of danger.
Hallowed or Hollowed?
We arrived at our ladies’ Bible study at the same moment and, as good Christians do, fought over who would let the other go ahead into the room.
“No, you first.”
“No, you.”
“I insist.”
“Well, thank you.”
“Love your new tote bag.”
“Thanks. I had to get a new one. Carrying both my study guide and my Bible every week split the bottom seam on my old tote,” I told her as we both headed for the most comfortable chair and mutely decided neither of us would take it.

Our air conditioning unit went out a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, it was during the few cooler days we’ve had this summer in Middle Georgia. When Josh, the HVAC guy, came out, he assessed the situation and informed us we had a couple of choices. We could repair the immediate problem, but, considering the age of the unit, there was no guarantee we would make it through the summer without other problems. The alternative was to purchase a new unit. He strongly recommended a new unit.

When people experience brokenness, such as a bone in their body, several things occur. The first feeling is pain because an unnatural, unwanted disconnect that has happened and rendered their body immovable or at a disadvantage. The next feeling may be a feeling of sadness. Sad that they have lost some freedoms that they may have once had. Doubting that they may get those freedoms back. The things that they did before, the places that they went freely may not be where they can go in the future.
