Brokenness

When people experience brokenness, such as a bone in their body, several things occur.  The first feeling is pain because an unnatural, unwanted disconnect that has happened and rendered their body immovable or at a disadvantage.  The next feeling may be a feeling of sadness.  Sad that they have lost some freedoms that they may have once had.  Doubting that they may get those freedoms back.  The things that they did before, the places that they went freely may not be where they can go in the future.

In a parallel way we can use the experience of a broken bone to show us what God wants in our obedience to him or what he wants us to become when we are broken.  God wants us to be broken from the world and our fleshly desires.  In Colossians 3:2-3 NLT, God tells us to die to ourselves: “Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.  For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.” These passages go on to say, “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you.  Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires.  Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.”

God allows us to have our own will—to do as we please—but most times our ways do not please God.  In Romans 8:6-8 NLT, he tells us what can happen if we have our own way: “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.  But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.  For the sinful nature is always hostile to God.  It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.  That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.”  Resolve in your heart that your life is not your own; if you are hidden in Christ, your will is broken.  If you surrender to the authority of God, the blood of Jesus makes you whole.

Brokenness in any form requires a healing process.  When we are broken, it is an amazing time to physically see healing, feel healing, and have hope for the future.

The healing time for broken bones is influenced by a number of variables.  For example, the ends of long bones are vascular so they heal faster than the center.  Certain types of food and exercise foster increased blood supply, and hence, the time it takes to heal.  To speed up the process of natural healing to this earthly body, people need to eat foods enriched with calcium.  They also need to elevate and rest their wound.  Elevation gets blood circulating around the wound, and rest renews.

In the spirit, we must eat the bread of the Word daily (Matthew 6:11) and be restored back to God.  Ephesians 4:22-24 NLT tells us, “throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.  Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.  Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” Healing in the spirit also requires elevation—elevation of our hands to God in praise—and resting in the Lord.  Psalm 63:4 NKJV says, “Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.“ Psalm 16:9 NKJV says, “Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope”.
When we allow God to restore us, the journey of our brokenness and healing will be a foundation for our walk with Christ.  Broken from our fleshly will, and healed to life in God.
