Two hunters got a pilot to fly them into the far north for elk hunting. The pilot was having a hard time finding a place to land when one of the hunters said, “See that small strip of land over there? That’s where we landed last year.” The pilot was not too thrilled about the idea, but he agreed to land in the small spot. He dropped the hunters off and agreed to come back in four days to pick them up.

After four days, the pilot returned to the small strip to find that the hunting expedition had been very successful. The two guys had bagged six big bucks. As the hunters began loading their gear in the plane, the pilot objected and said, “The plane can only take four of your elk; you will have to leave two behind.” They argued with him and said, “Last year we shot six and the pilot we had then allowed us to put them all aboard.” Reluctantly, the pilot finally permitted them to put all six aboard.

The pilot, with great skill, got the plane off the ground. Just a few hundred yards into the trip home the little plane began to sputter and shake. In a manner of moments the little plane crashed into the wilderness! Climbing out of the wreckage, one hunter said to the other, “Do you know where we are?” “I think so,” replied the other hunter. “I think this is about the same place where we crashed last year!”

The past can be a wonderful thing when you use it to gain wisdom for today! Unfortunately, too many people are trapped by their past. Their old failures haunt them and keep them from moving forward in life. God gives us a wonderful promise concerning our soiled past, “This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:21-23).”

Think of it this way, can you imagine trying to drive down the road with your rear view mirror the size of your windshield and your windshield the size of your rear view mirror? That wouldn’t be safe would it? That’s the way many spend their lives. More time looking back at a failed past than forward to a better tomorrow. We need our rear view mirrors to show us where we have been. Our past is very important and we should learn from it. However, we need our windshields to help us move forward in life.

Do yourself a favor, accept God’s mercies and forgiveness for your failures and get on with your life today!

Verse of the week:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”     2 Corinthians 5:17
