Momma Look!

“Momma watch me!” How many times a day do we hear that? It wears me out! I look, but then they want to show me again…and again. Whether it’s my 12-year-old upside down in a handstand on the wall, my third-grader showing me her most recent crocheted ankle bracelet (I’m wearing one now!), or my son showing me how he can lift the chair with one muscular arm, they all need my attention, encouragement, and delight.

For the past several months, we’ve memorized Psalm 139. I’m always amazed when I read that chapter because without us saying, “God look!” He already is watching us! He knows when I sit and when I rise. He knows my thoughts before I think them. He knows when I’m awake—when I’m sleeping. He is familiar with all my ways. Amazing!

I know and understand my children, but not half as much as God knows and understands them or me.

As the parent of three kids, I’ve noticed that I’ve become more and more lax with each of my kids. Other parents do this, too. Discipline starts to slide; bedtimes get later. I’m just not as clued in as I was with my first. But, God, who has been “parenting” people for thousands of years, never tires of us or loses interest in watching us. He always has time. He shows us consistent, pure delight as He gives us His full attention even when we don’t know we need it.

The next time you hear your kids yell with excitement, “Momma look!” let it be a reminder that the Lord is watching you, delighting in you, encouraging and loving you. Then watch your kids with a smile of joy!

“O Lord, You examine me and know. You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away You understand my motives. You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; You are aware of everything I do. Certainly my tongue does not frame a word without You, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it.
