Texas is experiencing three days of rain and storms, much needed moisture to feed the dry earth. The reverse of this drought relief is that the cold and blustery winds have pushed down the daffodils that are just starting to bloom and have probably frozen the peach blossoms that are budding. That means no peach crop this year.

During my bachelor days, I zipped around in a spiffy sports car that had a powerful engine, sleek lines, and cool-looking retractable, pop-up headlights. One day a headlight bulb burned out, so I bought a replacement. I removed the old one and placed the new bulb inside the headlight housing. Before securing the bulb, I flipped the switch to test it. The headlight flipped down into the well, and I heard a clunk.

Tumbleweeds are nature's welcome wagon to New Mexico. It has taken me a while to understand how a tumbleweed tumbles! I've come to realize that it takes a certain set of circumstances to create a tumbleweed. First, the tumbleweed candidate has a shallow root system—not much anchoring the plant to the earth. Second, the shrub gets dried out, due to lack of moisture. Third, a high wind blows and uproots the bush, launching it on its way through fields, and across roads, until it eventually lodges in a fence row.
