Remember the Duck

Little Willy was visiting his grandparents. While there, he was given his first slingshot. He went out into the woods and practiced shooting at a self made target, but could not hit it to save his life.

After hours of poor “marksmanship,” he decided to head back to the house. As he entered the backyard he saw his grandmother’s pet duck walking by. Without even thinking, he took aim and let the rock fly. You guessed it. Feathers went flying and the duck was dead!

The boy panicked and hid the duck in the woodpile. As he finished burying the evidence, he turned to go back to the house. To his dismay there stood his little sister Sally, who said in a loud voice, “OOOHHH, I’m telling!” He pleaded with her and promised to do whatever she wanted in return for her silence. She agreed not to tell their grandmother.

Later that day as they finished their dinner, the grandmother informed Sally that it was her turn to do the dishes. Sally said, “Grandma, I think Willy wants to do the dishes tonight.”

Willy responded quickly, “No I don’t. I hate doing dishes!”

Sally looked at him with a mean look and whispered just loud enough for him to hear, “Remember the duck.” Willy quickly changed his mind and said, “Oh Grandma, let me do the dishes!”

The next day the children wanted to go fishing. Their grandmother told them that they could go after they finished doing some chores around the farm. Sally said, “Willy said that he wanted to do my chores for me today.”

Willy denied ever saying such a thing. Again, Sally looked at him and whispered, “Remember the duck.” Willy agreed to finish all the chores by himself. This went on for weeks. Every time Sally wanted to get out of doing something she would whisper those dreadful words, “Remember the duck.”

Finally, Willy had all he could stand. He went to his grandmother and confessed what he had done. In tears he asked her to forgive him. Expecting to feel the wrath of her anger, he was surprised to hear her response. She put her arms around him and gave him a big hug and said, “I know, Willy. I was standing at the window and saw the whole thing. Because I love you, I forgave you the moment you did it. I just wondered how long you would let Sally make a slave of you."

Before you say how silly this is, stop and think. How often do you allow Satan to enslave you with something that God has already forgiven you for? Hold onto this promise of God,  “Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the  forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses” (Acts 13:38-39). If you turn to Jesus for forgiveness, you are forgiven!

Now do yourself a favor. Forgive yourself!

Verse of the week: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
