Bad Decisions
By Ronnie Wyatt
Three new freshmen were being recruited by a fraternity at a well known college. The freshmen wanted to join the fraternity, but were afraid of the initiation process. They were assured that it would not be too difficult, so they agreed to be initiated.
“Now, it‘s real simple,” said the head of the fraternity. “All you have to do is go out behind the school building and climb up on the storage shed. Then we will gather around you below. You jump, and we will catch you in this blanket.”
The freshmen were a little leery, but they agreed to the initiation. The first recruit stood on the edge of the building and without hesitation jumped toward the blanket. To his surprise the fraternity group moved the blanket and he hit the ground with a thud! The fraternity guys laughed hysterically as the recruit picked himself up and staggered on aside.
The second recruit stood on the edge of the building and hollered, “I’m not jumping! You are going to do the same thing to me!”
“Oh no, don’t worry. Just jump,” yelled the head of the fraternity.
Just as the recruit thought, as soon as he jumped they moved the blanket and he hit with a thud! They all laughed as he pulled himself up and staggered aside.
Still laughing, they yelled up to the last recruit, “Okay, it’s your turn!”
“No way! You're just going to pull the blanket away!" yelled the young man.
"No, we won’t! You have to jump! We won't pull the blanket away," they assured him.
"Look," the recruit says. "Nothing you say is going to convince me that you're not going to pull the blanket away! So what I want you to do is put the blanket down, and back away from it…."
Some decisions are just bad decisions aren’t they? Now, before any of you go out and try this initiation stunt just think how crazy it is. No one in their right mind would attempt something like this! Yet, the truth is that we all have made bad decisions in our life. We’ve done things that we look back on and wonder, “What was I thinking? How could I have blown it so bad?” Just remember, the real message of Jesus is the assurance of a past forgiven. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for all of our bad decisions, failures and sins. And arose again, giving us victory over those failures. Think of this wonderful promise, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Wouldn’t you like a brand new start on life? Ask Jesus to forgive you of all your failures and trust him alone for your eternal hope!
Verse of the week:
“In Him (Jesus) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” Ephesians 1:7
