What Are You Wearing?
By Jacqueline Hannah Dodson
In today’s world of fashion almost anything goes. Although there are some bastions of fashion that exist, most of the world allows for individuality. A mixture of diamonds, jeans and stilettos has become very popular for dress up occasions; yet, the casual Capri’s, sandals and a tank top gets entrance into just about everywhere.
As believers, however, we should be cautious about how we enter a world that stands hostile toward the message we bring.
Our fashion magazine, God’s Word, has directed us toward several essentials as we dress for our everyday world. Our Heavenly Father has provided us with wisdom that ranges from the bare essentials to the very fragrance that waifs into and around the world in which we live.
Undergarments can take the form of frilly and lacey or basic and sturdy. One can be totally over-whelmed when walking through the lingerie department of any clothing store. God covers the bare essentials in Galatians 3:27 by placing the emphasis on “being clothed with Christ” when we are baptized into His Body by the Holy Spirit.
Whether the day calls for business attire or business casual, whether dressing up or dressing down, Jesus warns in Luke 24:49 that we need to be clothed with the power from above. Without God’s power, we show up in rags. An effort undertaken on our own fall short and, at the very least, earns no reward. But when we take the time to trust God for what lies before us, whatever our day holds, people will take notice.
An important piece of our wardrobe fits over everything else. A good, sturdy coat is necessary to ward off the north wind. However a cloak can also cover up the “wow” effects of the garments hidden underneath. In 1 Peter 5:5 we are encouraged to wrap ourselves with humbleness toward one another. We can do this because of the under girding knowledge that Christ is Savior and that we are fully dressed in God’s power. At this point, we enter the world assured that it is God who guides our day and attitude. Humbleness becomes the wrap surrounding our entire being.
The last thing we do before walking out the door and into our day is spritz on that special fragrance that speaks to those around us. It is a known fact that cologne’s and sprays change depending on individual chemical makeup. The fragrance is the coupe de gras for the total effect we which to present to our world.
II Corinthians 2:15-16 tells us that as we become imitators of Christ toward others in our love for them and our gifts offered, we become a fragrant offering – and acceptable sacrifice pleasing to God. As we live our life for God and reach out to others with the knowledge of Christ’s sacrifice, we become an aroma that spreads everywhere – a fragrance of life.
Be confident that God is interested in what you are wearing. One day he promises we will be clothed in fine linen, white and clean. (Rev 19:13, 14 NAS)

Amen! Thank you for this.
I once talked to a woman who always wore very tight, low cut clothing.
She wondered why she was always dumped by one guy or another.
She gave me the opening, so I leaped in, worrying that she would hate me,
but also wanting to serve her. She had a sweet, innocent look on her face as I explained that her clothing told guys that her body was all she had to offer. She was surprised at this, as if she had no clue the message her clothing gave. She was aghast that she’d been telling people she didn’t respect herself all this time and then not surprised at the lack of respect she’d received.
The next week she showed up in a nice looking but not so tight and figure revealing dress. She looked very elegant. Within the year she was married to a man she’d liked for a long time.
