But There is a Monster Under My Bed

As a child I am sure you had some sort of fear. Some were scared of the dark; others of monsters under their bed. Now that we are all grown up, some of those fears seem silly. But as we grow, we accumulate new fears. Some are fearful of losing their jobs, not having enough money to pay the bills, or that they won’t be able to get into a good college. Even though you are no longer scared of the dark or monsters, you still worry about other things.
Saying that you are scared of monsters may seem silly, but being worried about other things is just as silly to God. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” God is very particular on stating that no one should be fearful or worry. He is in control of every situation you will face, and is walking right along side of you on the way.
I think Lanny Donoho gives the best illustration in his book God’s Blogs. He starts off by giving a story about a man going into surgery. What are some of the thoughts that will run through his mind? Will the anesthesia work? Will they make sure I am asleep before they cut into me? Will I be able to tell them if I’m not asleep yet? What if the doctor slips? What if…. Faith. It gets wiped away.
Most kids are not scared of the dark or monsters once their dads come into the room. That is how God should be to us. When we get worried or scared, we should turn to Him. He is always with us. As Lanny would say, “our Daddy is always in the room. When things get tough, realize that God has a purpose and a plan for the situation. We need to fully trust and rely on Him. We simply need to have faith.
