Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all of your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and the greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Matthew 22:37-39
Many times I have read this commandment and thought of how easy it is not to abuse it, especially, the first one. After all, I pray every day, and God knows I love Him and wouldn’t do anything to break our bond. On the other hand, the second one is a little bit harder. Yet, after realizing the abuse I have caused the second one, obviously I have abused the first one too. Unfortunately, I broke a commandment and separated myself from God.
Sometimes I like to consider myself as a partial sinner. Many times I have loved and helped those I know while shunning those who mistreat me or neglect those I don’t know. I have found one of the greatest challenges for many people is to find forgiveness when they have been treated unfairly. It is definitely understandable why anger is one of the seven deadly sins.
What would God want us to do when we are treated unfairly? First, God would want us to pray about the matter and ask to seek forgiveness and understanding. Second, God would want us to clear up any misunderstandings with the other person(s) if possible. Third, God wants us to forgive no matter what the circumstance is and move on. Last, as humans with emotions, we will need the continued prayers to slowly heal the broken pain with love. When I think about not wanting to forgive someone, I have to remind myself what God would want me to do. In Ephesians 4:32 the scripture says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Remember, if we hold onto anger and refuse to forgive others, we are separated from God by abusing His commandment. If God is able to forgive us, then we should be able to forgive too.
