How To Be The Perfect Woman

We live in a world that requires women to be all things at all times. We’re supposed to be supermom who makes homemade goodies and is the room mom every year in elementary school. We’re supposed to the successful career woman, clawing our way through the glass ceiling. We’re supposed to be the wife extraordinaire—never nagging, always supportive, always in the mood.  We’re supposed to be Mary, Martha, and Ruth, all rolled into one—we teach a Bible Class, head a Ladies Ministry, and volunteer at church every time the doors are open. On top of all that, we’re supposed to do a credible Martha Stewart impression with a spotless house, gourmet meals, and exquisite crafts gracing our home.

But, of course, we’re not these things. We can’t be these things—at least not all the time.

Thank goodness our God doesn’t call us to be perfect before we enter His presence. We force ourselves to jump through countless hoops, veering between depression and guilt at every turn, to prove ourselves worthy.

Ladies, I’m here to tell you—it’s just not going to happen. We’re never going to prove ourselves worthy. Not in this lifetime. Not in a thousand lifetimes. We can never be perfect.

Whew, isn’t that a load off? Don’t you feel better? The key is this: it’s not our problem. We can’t fix anything. Our job is this:  we drag our hurting, sinful selves into the presence of God and let him do the rest. And voila…we are made perfect.

Now that we’ve sorted out the major issues, here’s a tidbit for the littler issues. It will all be there tomorrow—the laundry, the dishes, the dust. Let me leave you with this poem by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton, as I ignore the laundry and the dishwasher that needs to be unloaded, and go love on my babies.

Cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,

for children grow up as I’ve learned to my sorrow.

So quiet down, cobwebs.

Dust go to sleep.

I’m rocking my baby, and babies don’t keep.
