My pastor recently spoke about David being known as “A Man After God’s Own Heart”. What a powerful statement that is. A man after God’s own heart. For someone to be given that title was a great honor. I can only imagine what people must have thought of David for him to have that name. David must have been righteous, giving, loving, kind, gracious, and always following what God had in mind for him. The thing is, David was human just like us. And in one instance he really messed up big time. We remember him not only for what he did, but also for how he handled the situation.
In II Samuel 11 the story of David and Bathsheba is told. There was a war going on at the time. Traditionally all the kings went with their armies to fight, but for some reason David stayed home. That was his first mistake. He was in the wrong place. As the story goes, David saw Bathsheba and called for her. He then sinned by sleeping with her. Second mistake. Wrong People. Bathsheba soon learned that she was pregnant. There was a slight problem; her husband was off at war. Instead of David making things right he committed another sin. David had Bathsheba’s husband killed while he was out at war. Finally with the help of the prophet Samuel, David realized his sin. He began praying to God and crying out for His forgiveness. In fact, you can read his repentance towards God in Psalm 51.
It is so important that you are in the right place with the right people. You cannot be just physically in the right place, but also mentally and spiritually. For if you are mentally and spiritually right, chances are you will not fall into being around the wrong people. It is also important to have the right people surrounding you and keeping you accountable. Step back and thing about it for a minute. Am I in the right place around the right people?
Psalm 51:1-4 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.”
