Can You Hear Me Now?

Have you ever felt like when you prayed, that the prayer just bounced off the ceiling? Is God even hearing me? Recently my small group at church was facing this problem. Many of the girls in the small group felt like their prayers were not being heard. When I pray, I sometimes get very distracted. I can be in the middle of talking to the King of Kings and next thing I know, I am thinking about what’s for dinner. I immediately feel guilty because I am not giving God my full attention. When I shared this with my small group, I realized that I was not alone. A lot of the girls felt the exact same way I did.

The next week, our small group leader brought in a big bag of journals. We were a little confused and didn’t know what she had in mind. She then pulled out her own bag. She dumped the bag over and a dozen journals or so fell out. She began to tell us that when she was our age she faced the same problem when it came to prayer. We all know that God can hear us, but sometimes we doubt Him. She began writing her prayers down in journals instead of just saying them. What this does is it forces you to come up with words to speak to God. She flipped through some pages and read them to us. She had dated the entries, and now she could look over all the prayers God had answered. When you write your prayers down it keeps you from getting easily distracted so you can focus just on pouring your heart out to Christ. She gave each of us our very own journal and encouraged us to begin our own written out prayer life. Just over a few weeks, our small group started to see a difference in their prayer life. We are all more focused when we pray. We are also excited about being able to look back on what was going on in our lives and being able to see first hand how God handled our requests.

1 Kings 8:28 “Nevertheless, listen to my prayer and my plea, O LORD my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is making to you today.”
