The High Calling

It is 12:35 AM. I am typing this article with one hand because my other is preoccupied with holding my two month old. My one-year old is in the bed with my husband and me as well, as opposed to her own crib, because she needed a little mommy time. Her little hands are rubbing my arms as reassurance that she’s still mommy’s favorite. Ever so often she attempts to push a key or two on the keyboard out of curiosity, only to collapse sleepily back down onto the pillow just before giving me her award winning smile. (This child is convinced that she is an only child, though she is number six out of seven. And I am persuaded that she deserves to be loved as such.)

My precious husband has just fallen asleep after working his nine-to-five job and engineering a four-hour studio recording session immediately after work. Before hitting the bed, with dark circles under his eyes, he lovingly assured me that if I wanted to go out on a date, he was willing… He loves me as Christ loves the church you see…I assured him that his rest was of greater importance… and he took me up on that.

So here I stand, or rather it is from here that I write and am inspired to speak on the topic of faith and the high calling in Christ Jesus. The tasks surrounding the completion of this article is only a microcosm, a mini-version of the types of challenges that we all must conquer in order to reach the destinies that God has ordained for us. In my case as in yours I’m sure, my life’s destiny goes far beyond the completion of a single article. One of the many things that God has instructed me to do is to revolutionize societies’ educational systems. If you know anything about the state of schools in the United States alone, you know that this is no small task. For the past six years I have been teaching within the confines of my home in Atlanta, GA proclaiming that I am the co-founder of a world- wide movement that is going to restore the original purposes of education. And for the past five years, my days have been like the depiction in the first and second paragraphs – days of consistent demand on the home front.

So what do you do when God has spoken a universal Word to you, but your local demands seem to speak much louder? While the demands of life are on a relentless pursuit, we as believers must pursue the high calling anyway. So it means that you type with one hand, hold a child in the other hand, verbally soothe another child on your lap, and resolve that this shall be done without waking your spouse who has given his all to the local demands on his own universal calling. That’s right, you just do it! Right? And the crowd goes wild!!!!!!

But come on now, who are we fooling? Does it really take Christ to achieve this?  I mean we all know that there are many non-Christians in society who have surmounted much more than this. In fact, it’s the conquering of such challenges that makes for greatness by the world’s standards. But I maintain that what will set our [believers’] stories aside from the rest is not that we accomplished such great works, but that we accomplished them through an unwavering belief and proclamation of what our God has said concerning us while we could not see it.

In my case I cannot abandon the establishment of Healing Waters Learning Institutes throughout the globe because of additional demands on my life. Yes, the bulk of my school’s students are currently my own and I don’t physically see the buildings world wide today, but to lose sight of the big picture lays up no inheritance for these babies that my husband and I are raising. For my soul’s sake and their future, I must proclaim what Jehovah has said, even as Abraham proclaimed to be the father of many nations before witnessing the birth of Isaac.

So, now what has He said concerning you? Are you living it in both action and proclamation? When you see Him face to face on that inevitable day, will you be counted a good and faithful servant?  Burying it in the ground, hiding it under a bushel is not an option.

Choose life – your own and the lives of those to follow.
