Yielding to One Another

As I was cleaning my desk, in hopes of wasting all my time instead of writing, I ran across some wedding invitations from this past year.  It reminds me of my wedding, a simple affair in the scheme of things, no more than fifty people at the ceremony with finger food right afterwards so that we could mingle and talk.  There was no receiving line, no formal dance, just us visiting with friends.

When Joel and I got married, we wanted it to be a celebration of a covenant.  We wanted the people there to stand as witnesses and to uphold us in our marriage.  We invited people that we wanted to hold us accountable to the principles of marriage presented in the book of Ephesians.  Ephesians, Chapter 5 was the center of our marriage ceremony.  The passage that was preached on was about submission.  God wants to give us a clear understanding of our marriage relationship and God provided His relationship with the church as the example.

When we are in a relationship with someone that is focused on God, we can trust them.  We can also rest assured that God is caring for us.  God created us all to fulfill different purposes.  From the Ephesians passage we can see that the husband’s responsibility is to love his wife and to care for her and keep her holy.  The wife is to respect her husband and yield to him.

We have been married for a little over six years now.  We have fallen short a few times of this great example, but we still strive towards it.

Ephesians 5:32-33  32 This is a profound mystery– but I am talking about Christ and the church.  33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
