Brooke “Barrettsmith” Adams is probably best known for her small television appearance on season five of American Idol. She made it to the top 44 before being cut off from the reality television show. The small appearance on the show wasn’t the start of her career, but it did motivate her to follow her passion.Growing up in Spring Grove, Illinois, Barrettsmith’s earliest childhood memory is singing. After graduating from high school, she formed a band with close friends and siblings. They gathered success locally. In the midst of the rising success, Barrettsmith and her younger sister collaborated together singing as a duo for a few years but then parted ways.

After appearing on American Idol, Barrettsmith signed with Essential/Sony BMG Records and shortly after released her self-titled album, which debuted in 2008. The self-titled album received great reviews and was favored for its unique rock ‘n’ roll style mixed with surprising melodic vocals. Barrettsmith’s soothing and flawless voice matches perfectly with the harsh tones of guitar and bass mixed with intense drum rolls.

Her debut album is one of growth and dependence on the Lord. “Anymore” is a fast paced, in-your-face, hard rock ballad filled with teenage angst. In the song, she’s not afraid to show anger, hurt and disappointment. When talking about the song, she expresses that it is okay to share these vulnerable emotions in a healthy way, “I think it’s important for everyone to know that keeping that kind of anger, bitterness and hurt inside is more dangerous than anything.”  In contrast, “Quiet My Heart” is a soft rock guitar-driven melody asking the Lord to quiet and calm the spirit.

Look around, don’t you fear//Paper tigers are your enemy//I know they seem real//Stretch out your hands and feel//The wind against your fingertips//And know that help is here//Right here.

Barrettsmith’s album ends on this encouraging, spiritually upbeat piano melody reminding us that the things of this world mean nothing compared to our Lord. “Paper Tigers” is a refreshing track that reflects Barrettsmith perfectly. A strong young woman determined to bring joy and happiness through the truth and redemption of the Lord.
