Goofy Birds!

Goofy birds are at it again! Can’t they find a safer spot for a nest? Last summer it was doves. They a have little brain, so I wasn’t too surprised. They tried our garage for a week. But, we kept the door closed, so they gave up in favor of the bird feeder outside our patio door. Five feet from our kitchen table, fully exposed to the southwest sun, they placed enough pine needles to hint at a semicircle.

Next thing I knew, an egg balanced on the ledge—and rolled off at the first wind. I picked it up and replaced it. Twice. I added handfuls of pine needles and dryer lint. The egg stayed and another was deposited. Every breeze blew away bits of nest and the sun beat down from dawn till night. I fretted over what would happen in a storm. I cut branches from my lilac bush and tied them to the feeder, creating a tunnel so the doves could see and escape, yet be protected. By now Gertrude and Irving (well, of course I named them!) should have known I was helping them, but every time I came near they scattered.

My son chased off the neighborhood cats and a hawk. I added fresh branches every other day. Little Belinda and Matthew hatched and grew quickly. We cheered when they flew. We groaned when Gertrude produced two more eggs. I scolded her and Irving for never trusting me, although I continued to protect them faithfully.

Recently, twigs appeared on the feeder. This time it’s robins. Robins are smart birds—why are they building on an exposed ledge? Foolish. Ah, but maybe not. They watched me hover over those doves all last summer. What safer place could they find? When I’m near, they stay. They even sing. I’d like to be like that with my Lord. I’m sure He’s provided for and protected me when I wasn’t aware of it. I’ve probably even flown off scared, not understanding His faithful goodness. I’d like to be more like the robins.

QUOTE: “I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free; for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” — Civilla Martin

“The Lord is your protector: the Lord is the shade at your right hand. The Lord will protect you from all harm; He will protect your life” (Psalm 121:5,7 NET).

Today’s devotion is by Robin J. Steinweg. Robin’s life might be described using the game Twister: the colored dots are all occupied, limbs intertwine (hopefully not to the point of tangling), and you never know which dot the arrow will point to next, but it sure is fun getting there!

Love your story, and all your “hovering” over those birds. Great bio!

What a marvelous illustration of those Psalm 121 verses. Such comfort. I loved this.

Birds are great teachers and illustrators. I’m sure they appreciate all your efforts. But as you said God is watching and caring for us. He covers us with his pinions. Thanks for the reminder.
