We humans are sensory beings. We gaze delightedly upon the colors and designs of creation. Listen to its music. Smell its fragrances. Savor an endless variety of flavors. Relish the soft caress of a breeze, a kitten's fur, a baby's kiss. It is through our five senses that we come to know the world in which we dwell.
And yet it is not creation, but its Creator we most long to know–and love. In her book Loving God With All Five Senses, author and Bible expositor Tammy Melton lays out with simple and poetic clarity how the same five senses which permit us to delight in our physical world were designed as well to bring us into a closer relationship with our Creator and heavenly Father.
The book is laid out in a six weeks, five lessons each, format. I personally enjoyed the blend of sometimes lyrical inspirational prose and written exposition with in-depth Bible study and journaling. But this study is not for the faint-hearted or those in a hurry. It takes setting aside distractions long enough to lean back, pour a fresh cup of coffee, open a Bible, and focus every sense on experiencing the presence and love of God. I came away gripped by the challenge to yearn after God with as much passion and delight my physical senses were designed to enjoy.
An excellent choice for personal devotions as well as group Bible studies.
