The Michael Gungor Band, a collaboration of family and friends united around Christ, is beginning to gain popularity and for good reason. In September, they released a new CD titled “Ancient Skies.” Featuring re-releases and a few new songs, if you haven’t heard of the band before, you should give this new record a listen.
Consisting of Michael, his wife and brother, and also a few friends, the band definitely has a distinct sound. At only 20-years old, Michael headed the worship ministry at Resurrection Life, a large church near Grand Rapids. This has given him insight into ministry to mix in with his superb song writing skills. He has written or co-written all of the songs he has ever been part of. This is an impressive feat that shouldn’t be overlooked.
In the beginning of his career, Michael started out with two independent projects. Now with his band, he creates music for the same reason he previously did. He takes very seriously the social situations around the world, and doing something in your community to better those around you. On his website he says, “If all I am doing is getting goose-bumps while singing to Jesus about how much I love him, and I don’t care about what’s happening in Darfur, there’s something very incomplete about that.” He is very sincere that his music is only part of his contribution to Christ.
On the new CD, one stand out track would certainly be the worship song, Giving it All. This song certainly has a feel-good message, and is very catchy. Opening your heart to the Lord and serving him is the point of the song, and the lyrics show just that, “You are my joy and desire, I resign to your will.” Don’t be surprised to find yourself humming this tune later in your day.
A newly released single which the CD was appropriately titled after, “Ancient Skies,” is beginning to show up on Christian Radio charts. On a post made on the band’s Myspace they shared encouraging words from a Minneapolis station which commented,
"Thank you for sending KTIS a GREAT song! After one listen, I knew."
After all these positive words and comments, aren’t you wondering why you haven’t heard of them sooner? The Michael Gungor Band is an up and coming group that we all should keep an ear listening for. Who knows, you could be hearing them on your local Christian Radio station very soon.
