What is it that comes to mind when you hear the word missionary? Many of us think about people traveling to areas around the world to work on building hospitals and housing while carrying the Gospel. But, how often do we realize that “mission” work comes in all shapes and sizes?
Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary defines “missionary” as a person undertaking a mission and especially a religious mission.
Remember this word as I introduce you to the band called Inhabited. This group is on a mission to reach out to our generation and to reach beyond the surface, right down into the heart of the matter.
The seeds that would become the band Inhabited were planted in 1999. According to the band’s official web site, Marcus and Sara Acker began working with their church’s praise and worship team in 1999 with little thought to someday forming a band. However, when the two were asked to write some songs for a lock in, things began to fall into place and Inhabited released their first album in 2003. Propelled by the help of Kyle Fenton (a Nashville Tennessee promoter) their first single “Rescue Me” shot to number 10 on the Christian Rock Radio charts.
I remember the first song I personally heard from the band. It was getting some good exposure on the radio station I listen to in my car. With an hour long drive to work each day, my radio has become one of my best friends. When the song “One More Night” came through the speakers, I was just blown away. Within the song there was so much passion not just lyrically but through in music itself. There are many talented bands in this world. You can tell that they have the technical skill that many of us pray to develop but with bands like Inhabited, there is a special element that eclipses their technical ability. That element is a passionate belief in what God is doing through them. In Sara’s voice, in Marcus’s guitar riffs, in Chad’s bass lines, and in Charlie’s thumping beats, one can feel the love and passion they have for God and for reaching out to others which opens the heart to receive the message contained in the lyrics.
Through each song, the band reaches out to the mission fields, into the hearts and minds of this current generation. Their music and lyrics are poignant and relevant to the world we live in. The band’s current single “Hush” speaks directly to the young women of our world exhorting them to not be conformed to the negative images we all see around us and to silence those thoughts that try to sneak into the mind to destroy. When I listen to the song, I feel it’s a message that the young men of the world need to pay very close attention to as well. Young women and men are under more pressure from the world now than in any other time in history. It’s good that we show them and teach through example that we should value ourselves as temples of the Holy Spirit and beloved of God.
Inhabited truly has become a missionary band, sowing seeds within those who hear their messages. Inhabited is Sara Acker a.k.a. Delight (vocals), Marcus Acker (guitar/vocals), Chad Carouthers (bass/vocals), and Charlie Harper (drums).
