The dictionary would call a candle “something burned to give light.” Similarly a definition for “fuse” might be “something filled with combustible matter to ignite a detonation.” Put the two together – Candlefuse – and you get an explosive rock band who intends to share the Light of the World through their music.
From the Northeast Corner of Alabama, and the shadows of Lookout Mountain, comes this guitar-heavy group of guys blasting out a hopeful message through their full-length debut album “Never Go Unheard.” “Look out!” is appropriate. You better pay attention, or you might get blown away by their dynamic success, because these guys are for real and sound as if they have staying power.
Many young Christian bands are on a mission, but few have a formal Mission Statement. Most unsigned artists of faith would claim the simple mantra “we’re going to ROCK for Jesus!” Not so Candlefuse… for their calling is more profound and can be examined almost anywhere they are mentioned online. Their Mission Statement begins with intentions based on a solid foundation – “With purpose, poetry, and passion we choose to follow Jesus Christ and the ministry example He set…” This is followed by their method of action – “To go out into the highways and hedges, and compel souls to come in.” Then their expectation is revealed – “We pray that our ministry will bring edification to the body of Christ and be a hand of comfort and healing to an aching world in need of His love.” By stating clearly their aim for all to see, they are not only promoting the meaning behind their music, but they are making themselves accountable for their product. What an encouragement – spiritual depth from Christian rockers!
To the album… while Candlefuse’s first signature song might become the remake of the worship favorite “Hungry,” a more defining tune would certainly be their energetic “Echoes of Words.” Not only could one imagine hearing this on mainstream radio between the likes of Creed and Daughtry, but the lyrics also provide some insight as to what the band might feel about their responsibility as spokesmen for Jesus Christ. They sing “your words will find you, they will define you, exposing who you are” and then the chorus follows with “what you say and what you do, will never go unheard, life and death are in echoes of words.” One imagines this being a daily reminder for the band, as they sing these words, to the obligation they must feel as ministers in music.
The song “Carousel” is an inward look at how Christians get stuck just “watching the world pass by” and urges the church to “step away from the pews within” because there are souls “starving for a life to live.” It then reminds us that “love isn’t love unless we give it away.” Though not a ballad, “Carousel” has the feel of one, with the wisdom and sincerity inside the lyrics whereas the song “Fighter” is a throwback rock refrain. It takes the listener back to the days of White Heart with hard-hitting licks and lyrics that make it a clear “battle cry.”
The buzz surrounding them is spreading like wildfire, and, as the band’s name might suggest, Candlefuse is ready to explode. Here’s hoping their music will “Never Go Unheard.”
