Emergence of New Revenue Sources

As audiences continue to access free media and pay for less and less entertainment, new forms of revenue are developing, but they are unproven. This is a tough time for a lot of the entertainment industry especially music, but movies are really in the same boat. These days you see Christian music festivals popping up as less revenue is derived off of sales. Today, it’s purely appearance fees and tickets sales as artists have to tour constantly to generate revenue.

That is easy to do with music, but not with a movie. So, what will happen when the impending crisis hits the movie industry? The only reason it hasn’t hit yet, is because a ninety minute film is harder to pirate or illegally download than a four minute song. But the day is not too far away. Already, entire movies are showing up on youtube and video sites in pieces free for people to watch. Pay-Per-View events are showing up on video sharing sites illegally for people to watch for free. You really don’t have to pay for anything anymore if you don’t want to. I see a major film depression coming that will affect the majors and will almost put many independents out of business. Whoever figures out how to really make money off of online video first will have a huge leg up on everyone else. The true future of visual revenue is going to be advertising and product placement which does not favor small independent filmmakers at all. So, while making videos is easier, making any profit off of videos has become much harder.
