What is a Writer to do?

Okay, I’ve had numerous Christian screenwriters and authors contact me wondering how to get started in the Christian movie industry as a writer. My answer always seems to be something they don’t want to hear.

But, the harsh truth of the matter is that Christian screenwriters don’t have very many outlets within the Christian market place. One of the realities of the entertainment industry is that talent and good ideas are not enough! Talent and good ideas are a dime a dozen! It takes a lot of work in each discipline to use those talents in a way that will give you a larger audience. Realistically, there are three options I see to “break into” the faith-driven, entertainment market.

1.  Screenwriters have the option of partnering with a film maker who wants their material and the writer agrees to receive a percentage of back-end profits. Few if any Christian film makers are going to be able to pay for a screenplay and so waiting for the movie to sell is the best you be able to will do.

2.  Produce your own film. This is probably the best option as video production costs are at an all time low. It still costs money, but then you own the project and get the profits.

3.  Hone your skills enough that you become such an in-demand writer that the studios would hire you to write their ideas, but don’t think you will be writing your own ideas-you’re a writer for hire, developing other’s concepts. This is a difficult route.

It’s a tough world out there for Christian screenwriters. There are a ton of good writers, ideas, and scripts available, but right now as a screenwriter you have to be willing to create your own opportunities to be noticed.
