“Facing The Giants” was one of the most successful Christian films in recent memory. With a budget around $100,000 and box office proceeds over $10,000,000 it was a great success story for Christian film makers. What makes this project even more unique is that it was made by a Church!

How revolutionary is that! Talk about having a vision to reach the masses and doing it effectively. The Kendrick Brothers and Sherwood Baptist Church made their second film and have used it as a very effective ministry. How exciting is that to think a church can make a theatrical release that has Sony smiling?

The question remains as to why no other churches are doing this? This should be an example of how today’s church can reach people in our own backyard. Today’s churches have most of these resources available to them as well as the most valuable resource in any project, people! Most churches are better equipped to make a film than independent film makers! Churches should be actively producing visual media. Visual media is the most powerful medium we have to communicate in today’s world. How can the church not use the most powerful medium in the world? We can’t be left behind! The Church should be on the cutting edge of arts and media.

Visual media is a powerful tool and I strongly urge church leaders to begin a visual media ministry and use it as an effective tool to reach people. I’m not suggesting that a church tapes a sermon and pays to broadcast it on TV, I mean be creative and produce things that will actually capture an audience. I’m sure almost every church has someone who knows a thing or two about producing visual media! The tools and technology are here! The ability to reach millions in one simple click is here! Join Sherwood Baptist Church’s example and consider producing God honoring visual media, whether it’s online content, teaching tools, TV, or movies!
