There are many Christians out there that want to make films. Out of these “would be” film makers persists a mistaken perception of how to get started. The reality of a Christian film maker is much different than the perception.

Many articles have been published on the topic and a few recently including Paul Crouch Jr. (TBN) who shares that he has countless ideas on his desk from people who want him to assume the risk and foot the bill. Also, Alex Kendrick’s “Facing the Giants” talks briefly about how many people pitch their projects to him, wanting him to make their movie. He states that those people are just wanting the easy way out and not wanting to do the work of finding a source of funding and managing the production themselves.

The truth is that if you want to make a film, your going to have to do the work yourself, that includes securing the funding. For independent studios, they rely on the success of past projects and oftentimes even profitable projects do not sustain future projects as the money goes to investors first. Ouch!  But, there is good news! The good news is that your first film shouldn’t cost much money; nobody starts at the top. You would be crazy to spend much money on your first effort anyway.

So, where does that leave Christians who want to become film makers? The only thing to do is take action! Now there are no excuses. With video production costs as cheap as they have ever been there is no excuse not to produce your own project if that’s what you truly want to do. Producing a movie can be extremely difficult; a feature film is a huge task. You should definitely team up for the experience and realize a lot of actual work; sweat, time, and risk go into it. For those who say they can’t raise the funds needed, start small and use what resources you have. Duststorm Productions made a film “www.squad77movie.com” that gained International distribution on DVD and cable, and included a computer game/comic spin-off. All of this on virtually no budget whatsoever. So, it has been done before and many times!

What’s amazing is that even equipment and financing options are available for virtually everyone. Duststorm Productions actually developed a way to work with film makers and producers on credit similar to a credit card. The production services can be bought via no interest monthly payments. So what will you do? Do you really want to be a film maker? If so, get started!
