Wounded Soldiers

One of my all time favorite movies is “Gone With the Wind”, the epic drama about the feisty Scarlett O’Hara and the plight of Southerners during the Civil War. There is a scene that haunts me right after the intermission. The camera swings wide and all across the ground as far as the eye can see are dead and wounded soldiers. It is an overwhelming sight to see those who once went forth with such determination and loyalty to the South now lying unable to move on the ground. As I think on that scene, often a picture that is less concrete but equally moving comes to my mind. It is a picture of those who started out as soldiers for the Lord and were intent on serving Him. Then, for whatever reason, hard times came or other things attracted their attention and loyalty and, now, they are no more effective than those soldiers in Atlanta.

My friend sat across from me at a table in our favorite restaurant. “I hate you.” We both chuckled. “I really do,” She said. “Look at how much you eat and you never gain weight. And me? I look at a piece of chocolate and my hips grow.”

Our air conditioning unit went out a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, it was during the few cooler days we’ve had this summer in Middle Georgia. When Josh, the HVAC guy, came out, he assessed the situation and informed us we had a couple of choices. We could repair the immediate problem, but, considering the age of the unit, there was no guarantee we would make it through the summer without other problems. The alternative was to purchase a new unit. He strongly recommended a new unit.

Have you ever hit a car in a parking lot? Well, I have. And I'm here to say, a spit-shine can go a long way in fixing things! See, my husband was inside of the hotel, the one where he planned to shoot pictures at a prom. He sent me back to the car for a tote which he'd left in the trunk. H sent me on an errand because I didn’t handle my position like a pro. It sounded like fun a job to serve as his sidekick, but I didn’t make the best assistant. Outside in the parking lot, my hair whipped back in forth, and debris blew by from the gusts of wind that rushed across the asphalt like invisible tornadoes. The winds were left from a recent storm the night before, but the sunshine was beautiful.
