Listen First

The smell of sizzling bacon wafted down the hall. Mom had hollered at me to get up and ready for school, but the scrumptious smell was truly my catalyst.
I dressed rapidly, ran a brush through my curly tangled hair and skipped to the kitchen.
“Morning M-” I was shushed before I could complete my greeting.
“Listen,” Mom whispered.
I sat at the kitchen listening to the announcer’s voice sounding from the cube shaped radio perched on the kitchen table. My siblings arrived and were also shushed. They plopped down in their chairs as we ate our morning meal in silence.
I have always enjoyed talking. My mom often told people that the only time I was quiet was when I was asleep. To my mother’s credit, she tried to warn me about stranger danger, but if she was with me, I had the confidence to talk to anyone.
I squirmed in my chair, folded and refolded my napkin and glared at the noisy annoying radio. Mom sat seemingly transfixed by the words of the announcer.
“And that is the rest of the story. Good day.”
Mom stood and began to gather the breakfast dishes. I sighed and pushed back my chair, “Well, he sure was a chatterbox!” I declared.
My family burst into laughter. When I was a child my nickname was “Chatterbox”. I had met my match. Some man named Paul Harvey had out-talked me.
After breakfast I pleaded with my mom, “Please, walk me to school today. I need to talk to you. It’s very important.” To my delight, she agreed.
“What was so important?” Mom asked as we neared the elementary school. I gazed at the ground, kicking the little pebbles that were in front of me.
“Well.” Nothing. I didn’t really have anything to say, I only wanted to talk. To have someone listen to the ramblings of my mind. I wanted to…well, chatter.
Mom stopped and knelt in front of me. “Annie, do you know why I wanted to listen to the radio this morning? It was a very touching story about a mother and her children.”
“Oh, but-”
“Want to know something special?” Mom asked.
I nodded. Mom shared a truth from God’s word that had changed her heart. She shared from a verse in James 1:19, “…Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (NIV).
My mom further explained to me that every word we speak needs to be carefully considered, for by our very words, we have the ability to share God’s truth and love. If all we do is chatter, what do we, or others, gain?
It wasn’t easy to change my habit of yacking. However, I reasoned that listening must be more valued by God than talking, since He gave us two ears and only one mouth. Breakfasts around our kitchen table took on a new tradition as the little cube radio entertained us with moving stories. As I listened I learned to treasure the wisdom and wit of Paul Harvey, but it was the tender moments after when mom asked me what I thought of the story that impacted me most. In this way, my mother was imparting to me the art of listening first before I spoke.
The God of Abundance

Some people think that God is a tight-fisted, penny-pinching and miserly God.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Someone put it this way: when God made prairies, He made miles and miles of them; when He made the mountains, He made many and gigantic; when he made the ocean he made a vast abundance of water; when he made the trees He made an abundance of forests; when He made people he made multitudes; when He made provision for our salvation He paid the highest price and brought abundant salvation.
In fact, all that God does is in abundance. Jesus didn’t come to earth to make us miserable, but to give the abundance of a full life.
Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10 NIV).
God’s abundant grace and mercy helps us to meet life’s needs no matter what they may be; so we need not worry because provision is plentiful.
I think we limit God by obsessing about what might happen in the future, when we should appreciate a God who never skimps in His provision. His supply will be more than enough. We should not worry! He said, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (Matthew 6:25 NIV).
Paul once wrote, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever” (Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV).
No matter what our lot in life, God is able to make all grace abound toward us. When we think we can’t carry on under the burdens of life, His unfailing grace and provision is poured out on us.
Not only does God give a copious supply, He intends that we not be stingy. He said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over” (Luke 6:38 NIV).
Prayer: Thank you Heavenly Father for your abundant supply in my life.
Life vs. More Life

“Prayer is my medication” whispered my friend who was grieving the sudden death of her twenty-three year old son. I was grieving, too, and trying to make sense of things. I was praying and pondering how we would ever come to a place of accepting this tragedy. Her next words came with strength and conviction: “St. Paul said ‘to live is Christ and to die is gain’” (Philippians 1:21 NIV).
This grieving mom was comforting me. This should not have shocked me. She was praying and pressing into God. The Holy Spirit spoke to her. In another version it was stated “Life versus even more life! I can’t lose” (Philippians 1:21 MSG).
Don’t you often wonder when someone goes through a horrible ordeal “How will the family get through it?” Then it happens. The Holy Spirit does actually what Jesus promised he would do by counselling those through their troubles. Reading God’s word daily allows the Holy Spirit to counsel and convict us. In an instant I sensed God’s presence in that room. He was moving in the hearts of many of us bringing good out of despair. He was reassuring us that He was there to comfort, support and fill us with hope.
The book of Philippians records that Paul was in prison. The result of his praying was that he was shown that he was in chains for Christ. God was using his pain for gain. Paul’s letter to the Philippians was similar to the devotion I am writing. We each saw the power of God working many things together for good through a bad situation. Paul was trying to encourage everyone that here on earth you can have some life on your own or you can have even more life if you choose to follow Christ. Paul was looking forward to his hope which is one day being with Christ.
Paul pleads “for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death” (Philippians 1:19-20 NIV).
Each of us should take a moment each day to be reminded we are not here of our own accord. The worldview for true happiness is being independent and self-seeking. Whereas, God’s view for true happiness is being united with Him in love and letting the Holy Spirit lead us and reveal life to us.
PRAYER: God, being led by your Spirit allows me to see how much there is to life and after life. Thank you for your perspective and revelation. Amen.
Let It Go

“It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small and the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all.” I came across these lyrics sitting in a quiet space drinking my coffee. These are lyrics from the song “Let it Go”, which is from the smash Disney hit movie Frozen.
I like this verse. It rings true for me. My past fears:
Fear of rejection
Fear of my parent’s marriage falling apart
Fear of my dad working himself to death
Fear of my children taking the wrong path
Fear of sickness
Once, a doctor challenged me to write down my fears, put them in an envelope, and revisit it in a month. I did that and found the result to be remarkable. Everything I was afraid of happening never came to pass. Thankfully, I am aware that fears can control me if I give them permission to.
At different times do you wish you knew the outcome right when you are in the thick of things so the fear wouldn’t consume you?
Jesus taught us “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth” (Luke 21:34-35 NIV). Jesus is not saying adversity accompanied with fear may come. He is saying it will come. Jesus goes on to implore us to “Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36 NIV).
I am happy today that my dad is 80, retired and healthy, and my adult children know Jesus. Sadly, my parent’s marriage did end in divorce.
What counts now is that I am aware and this girl is free from perfection and I can let it go.
For me truly to be free and “Let it Go” I had to put my trust in Jesus. That helped alleviate just about all my fears. I had to forgive myself for the regret I had because I wasted time in fear. I am grateful God forgives me and I have learned to forgive myself. Have you forgiven yourself?
PRAYER: Lord at times fear rears its ugly head. Help me to be aware of when this happens and trust you. Amen.
To Run, Or To Win

There is no time of day like chore time to bring out the lethargy in children. My children have the whole limp rag act down pat. If getting chores done as slowly as possible brought on a prize, my children would have treasure troves full of them.
I have to admit, I don’t blame them. After all, who really wants to do chores.
Even though chores are a dreaded time of day, they have an important purpose. Learning responsibility and the importance of taking care of things is essential for all of us. Without this skill, our lives fall into squalor and disorganization.
Just because something is good for us, doesn’t mean we want to do it. We might go through the motions just to get by, but our heart isn’t in it.
Getting by is in our nature, even sometimes in our faith walk. We go to church, read our Bibles and pray, but do we stretch our faith and listen for God’s direction to do something new for Him? If it seems to be the same old thing day in and day out, then chances are we are getting by.
Paul talks about this tendency to go through the motions in Corinthians.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it” (1 Corinthians 9:24 ESV).
We need to be more than runners. Do more than get by in our faith walk. We should run to obtain the prize.
Are you going through the motions, or running for the prize?
Prayer:
Lord, help us to remember we are more than just runners getting by in the race of faith. Give us the strength and the courage to run for the prize. Challenge us and helps us reach beyond our comfort zones to allow You to work in amazing ways through our lives. Amen.
