A certain tone invades the voice and laughter of those talking about something naughty. I can hear that particular timbre from across a crowded classroom or through a closed bedroom door. Although a tone cannot be written up in a discipline referral at school, nor does it usually support punishment at home, that lower pitch sets off internal alarms which prompt closer monitoring.

The past few months I have battled nausea and exhaustion. The only time I felt good was when I had a bite of food in my mouth, which was a struggle for me as I don’t enjoy overeating and gaining weight. But I’m thankful for the sickness and my inability to accomplish anything because my body is growing a little miracle, and this summer our family will be blessed with a new baby.

I am deeply saddened.
The city pasted a red sign on the door: This house is in dangerous condition. It is condemned.”
It’s true the electrical system is outdated, but it still worked. The plumbing was eroded and water constantly seeped out of holes in the lines under the yard. But it still worked. Paint is peeling from the wooden siding, but there’s enough left to show the color–green. Entering the house through the back door is tricky–the porch is sinking on one side. But it’s usable. No one lives there now, but I still treasure the house. It’s the only house Mother and Father owned.
