I’ve been shopping recently. Roaming the aisles of all my favorite stores I realized that I might be crossing over into the you’re-too-old-for-that era of my life. True, I love many of the cute fashions that are in style today, but really at my age (not that old), with two kids, stretch marks and a few not so subtle pounds too many, I just don’t see how I could pull off some of those outfits.

There are some days when there doesn’t seem to be an end to the bad news. A friend tells you of their child’s struggle with drugs, a co-worker discovers her husband has been cheating on her, a neighbor gets his pink slip at work, and your Mom calls to say your Dad’s doctor is sending him for more tests because he’s worried about something they saw on his x-ray today. Recently, I was teaching on forgiveness to a church in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador. At the end of my talk, I turned the service back to Pastor Juan, the pastor of this little church that met in his house. As Pastor Juan wrapped up our time together, he told his congregation that he believed the Holy Spirit was telling him that there were five people who had significant issues that they needed to forgive. There were exactly six people that came to the front in response to Pastor Juan’s challenge. Now I was really curious. Whether in English or Spanish, five and six are not the same.

“It’s broken,” I said glumly as the X-ray revealed a clean break in my daughter Sofie‘s right leg. Though the doctor merely confirmed what I had suspected all along, my heart sank as I stared at the image in front of me.
