It was one of those days.  I tried everything and nothing worked.

Whenever we visit my mother-in-law in Southern California, I try to make myself useful by doing some home maintenance.  She knows I’m not very handy and gives me only the easy tasks.

This time, the water filter cartridge needed replacing.  I shut off the water valve under the kitchen sink and removed the filter housing.  I tried to twist the filter cap off, but it wouldn’t budge.  I used my upper body to wring the cap open, but nada.  Then I tried to force it open with a screwdriver, but it still wouldn’t loosen.  My wife, Gail walked into the kitchen and saw me struggling.  “Let’s pray,” she said.  “Jesus, we know You want to be involved in even the little things.  Please help Bob with the water filter.”

WORSHIP: All That Jazzy

My Boston Terrier, Jazzy, worships me.  Maybe worship is too strong of a word, but I don’t think so.  She follows me from room to room just to be by my side.  She’ll rest at my feet or beg to lie in my lap.  When I take a nap, she jumps up in bed and pressed the small of her back against the small of my back.  She covers me with her kisses and looks up at me with an expression of adoration on her face.  She trusts me to provide for all of her needs and many of her wishes.  When I come in the door, she can’t wait to greet me.  Jazzy is content just being with me.

According to a news story I just read, the top-selling Bible in North America will undergo its first revision in over thirty years, modernizing the language in some sections and promising to reopen a contentious debate about changing gender terms in the sacred text.

The New International Version of the Bible will be revised to reflect changes in English usage and advances in Biblical scholarship.  The revision is scheduled to be completed late next year and published in 2011.  The NIV was first published in 1978 and more than 300 million NIV Bibles are in print worldwide; its publishers and distributors say the translation accounts for 30 percent of Bibles sold in North America.

Waiting On The Lord

Carrying a tall plastic tumbler half-filled with water in one hand and a pair of orange-handled scissors in the other, I stepped gingerly off the gravel road into the ditch.  I had to lift my feet high over scratchy brown weeds while simultaneously avoiding the ant hills scattered over the sandy soil.  Too late it occurred to me that sandals didn’t constitute appropriate footwear for my mission.

Life gets messy, doesn’t it?  But there are rewards for those who persevere.

Trading My Sorrows

In a world where it’s easy to get caught up with dissatisfaction, complaining, grumbling, and despair, it’s reassuring to know God has a trade-in policy.  He has his own “cash for clunkers” deal!

If you’re feeling down, troubled, distressed or perplexed, God’s Word says you don’t have to feel despair.  Feeling persecuted?  Don’t…He’s not forsaken you.  Feeling cast down?  Don’t you know the end of the story…HE wins!
