Heavenly Discussion

Have you ever looked into the sky, thrown up your hands and said, “God, where are you? I’m overloaded! I can’t think straight! I don’t know what to do. Why don’t you help me with this situation? I CAN’T HEAR YOU!” This was me a few years ago.Let’s face it. We’ve allowed our lives to be filled with brain-overload and it does not come with a pause button. It never stops. We go to bed thinking about things. We wake up thinking about things. Be still? Not a chance. Even when we try to have a few minutes of solitude, the collage of items on our to-do list keep popping up. How do you be still and listen? If you are like me you want to know the answer to this question.
In my quest for an answer I read a quote on heavenly discussion. It stated that heavenly discussion is a time where we listen more than we speak. I know, I know, this is not an easy task. This takes practice and lots of it! However, we must find time to stop, slow down, and listen for God to speak to us. We must schedule priority time with our Heavenly Father if we are to hear Him speak.
As I worked on this listening thing I discovered some specific practices to help me be still and listen:
- End your prayer/devotional time with a time of listening. Your heart is prepared to experience God. Start with 5-10 minutes of focusing your mind on what God wants you to hear.
- Find a quiet, peaceful place to be alone.
- Keep the time and place consistent to help you form the habit.
- Play instrumental music to create a calm environment.
When your mind drifts to your to-do list, refocus yourself by saying this prayer.
PRAYER: Lord, help me slow down and be still. Help me refocus my thoughts and put my trust in You so I don’t worry about the things I need to complete on my to-do list. If I take time to be still in Your presence and listen for You to speak, You promise to provide me with the answers I need to make it through my day.
“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, KJV).

Thanks, Donna, for those great thoughts. We all need more still and quiet time before the Lord.
