Just Like That

Haley’s seventh grade class was given an assignment to make a volcano. The middle school students were divided into groups and began to work on their projects. Haley’s group labored several afternoons, meeting after school to work on their volcano. The youngsters used chicken wire to form a cone-shaped base, making sure to include a nesting place for an empty tuna can. Then came the process of soaking strips of newspaper in a glue and water solution to make papier mache. The strips were carefully wrapped around the wire to form a mountainous mass. Afterwards they painted the volcano and added small people, animals, and even a train for aesthetic purposes.
The day the projects were due, Haley came home from school excited. She gave me a play-by-play description of how her teacher demonstrated each group’s project. As Haley recanted how her teacher poured a chemical into the baking soda filled shaft of her group’s papier mache project, she snapped her fingers and said, “Our volcano erupted, just like that.”
It reminded me of how fragile our lives are. Everything can change in an instant. The second chapter of 2 Kings gives the account of Elijah being taken up to Heaven in a whirlwind. One minute he was walking along beside Elisha. The next instant only his robe remained.
Just like that we can be in a fatal car wreck or have a heart attack. Just like that our lives on earth can be over, but that isn’t the end for us. We will spend an eternity either suffering in the fiery pit of hell or enjoying an everlasting life in heaven. It’s all a matter of the simple choice of asking Jesus Christ to be our Savior.
Romans 10:13 (KJV) says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” We can start our lives over—just like that—in spite of mistakes we have made in the past. Romans 10:9 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” It is as easy as saying, “Jesus, come into my heart and forgive me for the wrongs I have done. From now on, You will be the Lord of my life.”
Just like that your sins will be forgiven. You will have a clean slate. Just like that you will become a child of God.
