When our Libby cat was alive, she often paced back and forth at night—just couldn’t get satisfied. She’d jump up on the bed and use my body for a boardwalk as she made her way to my face. She purred and begged to be petted. So I petted her. Then she’d walk down the boardwalk to a spot where she curled up next to me for the heat—comfortable. After a second or two she aroused again, pacing up the boardwalk for more petting. Back and forth—purring as she went. And then all of a sudden, just when I thought the petting fulfilled her needs, she jumped off the bed to run and have a bite to eat. She sought satisfaction and found it in being petted, in being comfortable, and in being fed, but never for long!
I think human nature is somewhat like that. We spend our lives going back and forth through life seeking satisfaction. We try to find it by being comfortable. We gain possessions and just when we get what we think we want, another want surfaces. We also want to be petted. We seek praise and attention and desire fulfillment. But even when others give us the recognition we think we desire, we find a hole that hasn’t been filled. We even seek fulfillment in comfort foods. For me that would be all those things high in fat and calories! Macaroni and cheese, yeast rolls dripping with butter, you name it! But while we gain pounds, we often do not find our needs met.
That is when I am pointed to my Heavenly Father. He has been there all the time wanting to meet our needs. He is the only One Who can fill the hole in our souls. He provides for our comfort, acknowledges how valuable we are to Him, and provides spiritual Bread that leaves us feeling full. Not one need left wanting. He either changes our desires, or provides for our real needs. And along the way we find we have found a Friend who sticks closer than a brother.
What more could we want?
PRAYER: I worship You for Your presence—always there waiting for me to acknowledge You. Always available for provide my every need. Thank You for this Father-love. May I find my complete fulfillment in You alone.
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 KJV).
