Trust Me (Wink)

“Let me get this straight. You want me to stand up on this table, fall backward, and trust six or so giggling teenagers to catch me? And you’re telling me this illustrates our trust in God?”
The teen Sunday School class had gone on the prowl for some unsuspecting vict—I mean, participant. I was on my way to the choir room. I searched my brain for any excuse: my high school gymnastics coach once dropped me, though she’d been trained to catch people; my fear of heights made me hesitate to wear high heels; Mom taught me never to put my feet on a table.I looked at their eager faces. What could I say? They hauled me up onto the table and down I dropped, praying for safety. By some miracle, they caught me. Their experiment was a success. I never did tell them how many bruises I counted the next day. They never knew how carefully, from then on, I made sure not to be nabbed by any more Sunday School classes.
I’m not sure what the teens learned that day. As for me, I came away thinking it was a poor illustration. After all, the important thing is not the trust—it’s who we’re trusting. If God had said to me, “Fall off this table into My arms, child,” I’d have had no problem. Or would I?
Maybe the real test is believing that God is able to work even through faulty human beings. It’s knowing that even if I end up with bruises, He’ll work it out for my good. It’s trusting Him not only when I choose and am in control of the circumstances, but when I have to place myself in someone else’s hands—the dentist, the doctor, even some teens.
PRAYER: Lord, I admit it’s hard for me to let go and trust You. It’s a little like falling backward into the air, hoping to be caught. Help me to do better.
“And they that know Thy name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee,” Psalm 9:10 KJV.
Today’s devotion is by Robin J. Steinweg. Robin’s life might be described using the game Twister: the colored dots are all occupied, limbs intertwine (hopefully not to the point of tangling), and you never know which dot the arrow will point to next, but it sure is fun getting there!
Congratulations, Robin! Thanks for sharing such a sage, delightful, piece of yourself. Ah, trusting…mmhmmm.
Thanks, Robin, for that illustration. I love how you said that “even if we get bruises, God will work it for our good.” So true. Thanks for sharing.
Good good good–write some more.
