Wrinkled Music

The young man scuffed the toes of his laceless shoes. He stared at the twelve-inch squares of linoleum on the floor of the music department’s practice room.
“Yeah, I’m not what you’d call prepared for today’s lesson.”
“Why not, Brad?”
I waited while he balanced his trombone in one hand and dug something out of his backpack with the other.
“My…my music’s wrinkled.”
It was indeed wrinkled. So was my smile.
As excuses go, it was one of the lamest I’d heard.
Was it too reminiscent of excuses I’d used?
“Lord, I want to trust You with our finances, but…but…”
“Father God, I intended to obey You on that issue, but…”
“Lord, I’d worship You, but my music’s wrinkled.”
It was time for Brad’s lesson. And mine, too.
PRAYER: Lord, I can’t imagine how tired You get of my lame excuses. Help me to recognize them for what they are. Please give me the courage to be honest with myself and with You, and to push past the excuses into a place of victory.
VERSE: “For the Word of God…is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart,” Hebrews 4:12b KJV.

Cynthia–that’s a good one! Reminds me to check my excuses at the door and worship with abandon. Thank you.
Thanks, Cynthia. No, really. I mean it. You just blasted a hole in my excuses. Now what? 😉
