Mini-Me

Katy started the summer in no-man’s land. She was too old to stay in the children’s department of our church, but still feeling too young for the student ministries (ATTIC). No longer could she get by with answering “God” to Sunday School discussion questions. When we asked her to think and dig deep, she would say, “but I’m just a little girl.” We helped her realize she was allowed to have a thought in her head. No pat answers.
Right before school started, Katy came to ATTIC sporting a new pixie-style hairdo. Her eyes radiated brilliance. The new ‘do gave her extra confidence as she started junior high. What’s more, with her round face, she looked a bit like me. Not having children, I couldn’t be more pleased by that. We decided Katy was my mini-me. Katy/Kathy, she was just missing the “h” in her name—she really WAS my mini-me!
We both laugh. We both dig up thoughts from the deep. We both want to please others. And we both love Jesus.
Mini-me made me feel so good about my service for the Lord through the student ministries. She was a physical reminder about why I did what I do. I thought of the Bible verse that says, “follow me while I follow Christ.”
Now we are nearing the end of the school year. Katy’s hair is growing out. She told me the other day she no longer wanted to be my mini-me. Now she’s ready to just be Katy. That means even more to me. Her own identity. Her own thoughts. Her own relationship with Jesus.
PRAYER: God, help me radiate You to others and help them find their identity in You alone. I want to be YOUR mini-me!
“Therefore, be imitators of God as dearly loved children,” Ephesians 5:1 NET.

I’m Katy’s dad and I just wanted to say that Kathy has been a super role model, not only for her “mini me” but also for our other 2 kids, Paige and Tyler. The work that she and her husband (our pastor) are doing for our church is tremendous and definitely shows their love for the Lord. Thanks Russ and Kathy :o)
Just as a fun update–Katy answered the tough questions of the resurrection yesterday in Sunday School. She’s one of my youngest in class, but she really shined with the kind of wisdom that comes from God. At one point I stopped to ask her, “What did you eat for breakfast, because you surely ate the ‘breakfast of champions’ and I want in on some of that!”
