Dads Doing It Right

Deadbeats. Absentee. Workaholic. These words sum up much of what we hear through the media about dads. It’s true there are many dads who would rather be anywhere than with their kids and wife. While it is abundantly clear that America is at a loss for perfect fathers, it’s also crystal clear that some father’s are doing their part in leading successful, Christ-honoring families. My dad was one of those. Worked hard, loved deeply and openly, played with his kids – and while I am sure there were times when he was worried or anxious he didn’t take it out on us. He was a great teacher. As a homeschooled child of the late 80’s, I am proud to say that all my math skills can be attributed to my dad spending countless hours at the dry erase board explaining integers, whole numbers and fractions.

But he was more. He spent time in God’s Word. I saw it. The memory lingers in my mind probably more vividly than any other memory I have of him – sitting at the end of the couch with his coffee cup on the table next to him, with his Bible opened to the Proverb of the Day. He was involved in serving at our church. Whether as a teacher with youth or ushering during the offering, he was available. He also helped take care of my mom’s younger brother, Steve. Steve had Down syndrome. Funny how when my parents got married at eighteen and twenty-three years of age, no one mentioned that they’d be welcoming Steve into their home just four years later. But Dad rolled with the punches and loved Steve like one of his own children.

There are fathers in our world today who are like my dad. They’re looking to Jesus to order the steps of their family. They spend time teaching their children more than math or how to play good basketball – they teach them how to love Jesus and to grow and mature into godly young adults. Are they perfect? No. Absolutely not. But they are striving to please God.

So this Father’s Day, with all the talk of deadbeats and absentee fathers, maybe you can look around and find a dad who is doing something right, something good, something eternal. Thank him. Give him a pat on the back. Tell him you’ve noticed.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful gift You gave me in my earthly father. Thank You for the lessons he taught me, but more importantly for helping him be such an inspirational blessing to me as his daughter. Thank You for the wisdom and understanding You gave him as he raised his family.

“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord,” Ephesians 6:4 KJV.

Thanks, Gina. Yes, there are a lot of wonderful Dads out there doing their best for their kids. I had a wonderful Dad myself. What a great legacy a faithful Dad leaves to his children.

Amen, Gina! Few accolades go out to fathers these days. I’m so glad you honored your dad.

For those whose fathers fell short, or maybe never even got high enough to fall, take heart that there are god-fearing, kind, loving, faithful dads out there.
